Melanistic Squirrel

Here in New Haven we have a lot of squirrels. They are all brown.
Well... almost all of them.

Once, Rahul and I were out walking a large park by our home. I was checking out the behind of a large pit bull that was walking in front of me and wondering how such a strong animal was willing to be on a leash when Rahul yelled,

"Did you see that?"

Darting away from the pit bull, I saw a quick flash of black fur. Excited Rahul stated, "It is a Melanin squirrel." Hoping to get a better look we circled the bottom of the large oak he ran up trying to get a glimpse of this very different animal who has an excess of melanin*.

In India, I was, "the melanin squirrel" and as soon as we got of the plan I knew it.
Now, myself, Snookie and the Melanistic squirrel all know how it feels to be a novelty.

*Melanin is the wonderful ingredient that gives some (Indians) a nice golden tan and some (me) white skin and freckles.
